St. Louis awarded MLS team in the future

According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Major League Soccer will be awarding St. Louis a team in the future. An official announcement is expected to be on Tuesday.

The post said they were made aware of the plans, but their sources have asked for anonymity because nothing has been officially announced yet. Their story also said MLS and the ownership group declined comment.

The city has had a campaign “MLS 4 the Lou” ongoing. The Post-Dispatch story also said that the ownership made a pitch to the Board of Owners during the All-Star Game recently.

The ownership group includes Carolyn Kindle Betz, who is the President of Enterprise Holdings Foundation. In addition, it also includes Jim Kavanaugh, who is the CEO of World Wide Technology. This ownership group also includes the Taylor family, who started the Enterprise Rent-A-Car franchise.

Kavanaugh is also the CEO of Saint Louis FC, which competes in the USL. This team was launched five years ago on May 1st, 2014.

He is also part of the St. Louis Blues ownership group.

In April, according to Yahoo Sports, MLS was negotiating with St. Louis and Sacramento for an expansion team. The Post-Dispatch also is reporting in their story that there will be a privately funded soccer stadium built for the team.

Presently, there are 24 teams in the MLS. Inter Miami CF and Nashville SC are expexted to join the league in 2020.

The Austin FC are expected to join the league in 2021. The Post-Dispatch is reporting that the team is planning a 2022 inaugural schedule.
