The United States Men’s Basketball National team was eliminated from the FIBA World Championship early Wednesday morning. They were defeated 89-79 by France in Dongguan, China.

This is the USA’s first loss in international competition since the 2006 World Championship. The loss snapped a 56-game win streak in international competition.

The best that Team USA can finish is fifth. Their berth in the 2020 Olympic games is already secured.

On Thursday, Team USA will face Serbia in a consolation game. France moves on to face Argentina in the semifinals in Beijing on Friday.

While the team was comprised by NBA players, there was no elite players on the roster. So many players backed out of playing for this team due to their focus on the upcoming NBA season.

Donovan Mitchell led the team in scoring with 29 points. However, none of those points came in the fourth quarter.

In the final minutes of the game, Team USA went scoreless in six consecutive possessions. This allowed France to take control of the game.

“We came here to win gold,” Utah Jazz center Rudy Gobert, who played for France, said. “We knew it wasn’t going to be easy. A lot of people counted us out, but we got the win.”

This was France’s first win against the United States in International play. Previously, in major international contests, the team was 0-9.

Three years ago, the teams met in Rio de Janeiro in the Olympics in which the USA won 100-97.
