Funny Cars return to zMAX Dragway this weekend. The NTK NHRA Carolina Nationals will take place from Friday, Oct. 11 through Sunday, Oct. 13 in Concord, North Carolina.
This is event No. 21 on the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series. In addition, it is event No. 3 of the Countdown to the Championship.
NAPA Auto Parts Funny Car pilot Ron Capps will look to repeat as the race winner. He defeated DHL Funny Car pilot J.R. Todd in the final round.
The Carlsbad, California native went 3.890 at 331.20 mph. The Indianapolis, Indiana native went 4.311 at 214.96 mph in the losing effort.
Capps’ Don Schumacher Racing teammates Tommy Johnson Jr., Jack Beckman, and Matt Hagan will also be competing for the Wally this weekend. Todd’s Kalitta Motorsports teammate Shawn Langdon will also be on the property, as he attempts to win his second straight race.
John Force Racing’s dynamic duo, Robert Hight and living legend John Force, will be on the property. Full-time competitor Levi, Ray, and Shoup Inc.’s Funny Car pilot Tim Wilkerson will also be there.
Fellow full-time competitor Cruz Pedregon will be piloting his Snap-On Funny Car in Concord. Fellow full-time competitor Bob Tasca III will be there piloting his Ford Motorcraft/Quick Lane Funny Car.
Other Funny Car competitors on the property include Terry Haddock, Dave Richards, Bob Gilbertson, Dale Creasy Jr., Mike McIntire Jr., Jim Campbell, and Jonnie Lindberg.
There are 18 Funny Cars on the property this weekend. Only 16 will make the show following eliminations on Saturday.
That means two Funny Car teams will not be competing on Sunday.
Hight has the most wins of any Funny Car competitor at this facility. He has won five times, including 2009, 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2017.
