CCSU officially hires Ryan McCarthy as full-time football coach

Central Connecticut State Blue Devils have removed the interim tag off of head football coach Ryan McCarthy. The school announced he will be the permanent head coach moving forward.

McCarthy was the team’s Offensive Coordinator before his appointment as Interim Head Coach. He will officially become the team’s permanent head coach on Thursday during a press conference at Kaiser Hall.

The head coaching position became available when former head coach Pete Rossomando left in January following five seasons. Rossomando accepting a position as the Rutgers Scarlet Knights Offensive Line Coach.

“I’m the head coach and that’s how I’m treating it,” McCarthy said, according to Courant.com. “I’m the head coach until they tell me I’m not.”

Under McCarthy, the team has gone 5-1 thus far this season. In addition, the team has a No. 25 ranking in the STATS FCS Top 25 poll.

“It makes me very proud to announce Ryan McCarthy as the head coach of CCSU football,” Athletic Director Brian Barrio said in a release. “Ryan is a respected coach and the team has flourished under his leadership this year. We look forward to the Blue Devils’ continued success under his leadership.”

Before his jobs at Central Connecticut State, he also served as a long-time assistant coach with the Albany Great Danes from 2004 through 2017 as their offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. He began his coaching career as the Siena Saints quarterbacks coach in 2003.
