Reigning Pro Stock Motorcycle champion Matt Smith is the provisional No. 1 qualifier in his category on Friday. Smith went 6.842 at 198.64 mph at the Dodge NHRA Nationals presented by Pennzoil at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Smith will attempt to have his numbers hold up on Saturday. If they do, it’ll be his sixth No. 1 qualifier of the 2019 season. In addition, it’ll be his 37th No. 1 qualifier of his career.

“I mean, honestly, if we had made a better run in the first round, we should have went 6.82 or 6.83 in the second round,” said Smith, who did not improve in his second qualifying attempt. “So, we left a little bit on the table. I did a bad job of shifting in the first run and I did a bad job riding on the second run so I definitely think we could have gone faster.”
