Florida State Seminoles fired head football coach Willie Taggart on Sunday. The news came just one day after a 27-10 loss to the Miami (Florida) Hurricanes.

He was fired less than two years into his “dream job.” Taggart went 9-12 during his one-plus tenure at the school.

“I spoke to Coach Taggart this afternoon to let him know of our decision,” Florida State Director of Athletics David Coburn said. “I met with the team and coaches immediately after that conversation to let them know of the change. It was very important to us that the student-athletes know right away.

“We deeply appreciate all that Coach Taggart has done for our program and wish him and his family nothing but the best.”

Odell Haggins has been named interim head coach. Florida State officials will begin a national search for Taggart’s replacement.

Haggins was previously the interim head coach when Jimbo Fisher left for Texas A&M.

The Seminoles are 4-5 with the loss to the Hurricanes. The odds are that Florida State will not make a bowl game for the second straight year.

Florida State is expected to beat Alabama State. However, it will be tough for them to become Bowl eligible with games forthcoming against the Boston College Eagles and the Florida Gators in the season’s final three weeks.

“I think very highly of Coach Taggart and wish him well, but in the interest of the university we had no choice but to make a change,” Florida State University President John Thrasher said. “We will support our student-athletes in every way and do all we can to return to the winning tradition that is Seminole football.”

Taggart went 5-7 during his first season at the school. He also had a 3-5 conference record within the Atlantic Coast Conference.

This season, while the team was 4-5 overall, the Seminoles went 3-4 within the ACC.
