Black Hills State Yellow Jackets head football coach John Reiners has stepped down. He resigned at the end of the 2019 college football season.
He had a 27-60 record during his tenure at the school.
“I want to thank Jhett Albers and the administration at BHSU for the opportunity to be a part of the Yellow Jacket Athletic Family for the past 11 years as both an assistant and head football coach,” Reiners said. “BHSU Football will always hold a special place in my heart.”
A national search has begun for a new football leader for the 2020 season.
He resigns following a 3-8 record in 2019. All three of the team’s wins came at Lyle Hare Stadium in Spearfish, South Dakota.
Two of the three wins were in conference play, as the team went 2-8 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. The Yellow Jackets were 3-3 at home and 0-5 on the road.
The school began the season on a three-game losing streak. Their first win of the season came on Sept. 28 against the Fort Lewis College Skyhawks with a 13-7 win.
Following win over the Skyhawks, the team lost to the Dixie State University Trailblazers. The team then won its second game of the season over the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology Rockers with a 48-28 win.
The Yellow Jackets then went on a four-game losing streak. Their season concluded with a 19-7 win over the Azusa Pacific University (California) Cougars on Nov. 16.
“We thank Coach Reiners for his tremendous commitment, professionalism, and tireless efforts to the Yellow Jackets Football Program and Black Hills State University,” Director of Athletics Jhett Albers said. “We respect his decision and wish him all the best in his future endeavors.”
