Miami Marlins acquired infielder Jonathan Villar in a trade with the Baltimore Orioles. In exchange, the Orioles are receiving pitching prospect Easton Lucas back in the deal.

Also, in a corresponding move, the Marlins have designed two players for assignment. Those players are JT Riddle and Tayron Guerrero.

Villar is arbitration eligible and is expected to receive a big offer from the Marlins. He is in the final year of arbitration control before becoming a free agent at the end of the season.

His role will be determined by manager Don Mattingly. Previously, Miguel Rojas and Isan Díaz were locked in for sports in the infield.

However, with this move, Mattingly may make one of those two players a utility player. He also has Jesús Aguilar, who was claimed off waivers, in the mix as well.

With the Marlins not expected to compete for the Division, Villar, and Aguilar could even be trade candidates closer to July’s trade deadline.

The 28-year-old La Vega, Dominican Republic native joins his fourth MLB team with this move. He previously played with the Houston Astros and the Milwaukee Brewers besides the Orioles.

He spent one and a half seasons with the Orioles after being acquired in a 2018 trade.
