Atkinson III, former ND back, dies at 27

George Atkinson III has passed away. He was 27.

The news began to leak out on Monday night that Atkinson III has died. He dies months after his twin brother’s death, who died in December 2018.

He reportedly passed away on Christmas Day 2018. Atkinson died unexpectedly, according to The Mercury News.

Sports Illustrated is reporting that this twin was dealing with depression following his brother’s death. However, an official cause of death has not been released yet.

In a post on “The Unsealed,” Atkinson III wrote that he was struggling. The post was titled “To Kids Facing Tough Times”

“Like you, I am still struggling,” Atkinson wrote. “My mother’s birthday just passed and I know the holidays this year won’t be easy. But I am trying to take life one day at a time.”

The twins are the sons of former NFL safety George Atkinson. He spent 10 seasons with the Denver Broncos, before spending his final season in 1979 with the Denver Broncos.

The Atkinson twins played two seasons with the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. They were a part of the 2011 recruiting class.

In his collegiate experience, he had 153 carries for 943 yards and 10 touchdowns. Atkinson III also had 10 receptions for 65 yards.

He was an undrafted free agent in 2014.  In 2016, he had seven carries for 34 yards and one touchdown for the Cleveland Browns.

Atkinson III also had 271 return yards between the Browns and the Oakland Raiders, who he played for in 2014.
