The Philadelphia Phillies have signed free agent shortstop Didi Gregorious to a one-year deal. He will make $14 million during the season.

There was a lot of interest in him, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan. But he ultimately chose the Phillies.

Gregorious signed a prove-it deal with the Phillies. He is going to try to improve his value and establish a new market for himself following the 2020 season.

With this move, Gregorious is reunited with Joe Girardi, who was named the Phillies manager in November. The two were previously together in New York.

His addition may cause the end of Jean Segura’s tenure with the team. Both players play the shortstop position.

If general manager Matt Klentak cannot find a taker for Segura, the team may be better suited to move him to either seconds or third base to fill those voids. Then, it’ll be one less signing that the team needs to make.

The addition means filling the void after the Phillies let second basemen César Hernández and third baseman Maikel Franco become free agents.

The Phillies made two big splashes in free agency. Besides signing Gregorious to his one-year deal, the franchise also signed free agent Zach Wheeler to a five-year, $118 million deal.

Gregorious missed part of the 2019 season after having Tommy John surgery. He had a .248 batting average with 16 home runs and 61 RBIs in 82 games.

He also had 14 doubles and two triples on 77 hits in 324 at-bats. Gregorious also scored 47 runs.
