MMA free agent MacDonald signs with PFL

Rory MacDonald has signed a Professional Fighters League contract. The 30-year-old will make his PFL debut during the 2020 season.

PFL — formerly known as the World Series of Fighting — is a mixed martial arts league that has the first-ever MMA postseason. The winner of the New Year’s Eve postseason tournament wins $1 million.

MacDonald brings a 21-6-1 record into the PFL. He will compete in the Welterweight Division.

He was defeated in his final Bellator fight. Douglas Lima won via a unanimous decision at Bellator 232 on Oct. 26, 2019.

In his six-fight Bellator contract, MacDonald went 3-2-1. The three wins were over Paul Daley, Lima, and Neiman Gracie.

The Kelowna, British Columbia, Canada native lost to Gegard Mousasi and Lima. The majority draw came against Jon Fitch on April 27, 2019 at Bellator 220.

Before competing in Bellator, MacDonald fought in the UFC. He also competed in regional promotions: King of the Cage Canada, Rumble in the Cage, and Extreme Fighting Challenge.

MacDonald is the first Canadian in the Welterweight Division. Portugal, Serbia, and Sweden also have one fighter in the Welterweight Division.

The Welterweights presently signed to PFL include David Michaud, Ray Cooper III, Glaico França, Chris Curtis, Magomed Magomedkerimov, Sadibou Sy, John Howard, Andre Fialho, Handesson Ferreira, João Zeferino, Bojan Veličković, Zane Kamaka, Gamzat Khiramagomedov, Louis Taylor.

On New Year’s Eve, Michaud and Cooper III will battle it out to win the $1 million prize to be crowned the 2019 welterweight champion.
