White Sox sign free agent Edwin Encarnación

Edwin Encarnación signed a free-agent contract with the Chicago White Sox on Christmas. He received a one-year deal with the franchise.

According to El Caribe’s Yancen Pujols, it is an $11 million salary for the 2020 season. He is also receiving a $1 million signing bonus.

Pujols is also reporting that there is a $12 million option for the 2021 season. WSCR’s Bruce Levine is reporting there are no buyouts in his contract.

He is the latest signing, as the team previously signed Dallas Keuchel on December 21st. One day earlier on December 20th, the team also signed free agent Gio Gonzalez.

The team also signed free-agent catcher Yasmani Grandal in November.

According to FanGraphs.com, Encarnación is projected to bat fifth in their lineup. He is expected to bat behind Grandal in their stacked lineup.

The 36-year-old La Romana, Dominican Republic native joins his sixth MLB team. He previously played for the Toronto Blue Jays, Cincinnati Reds, Cleveland Indians, New York Yankees, and the Seattle Mariners.

On June 15, 2019, he was traded by the Mariners to the Yankees. In exchange, the Mariners received minor league pitcher Juan Then.

Split between the Mariners and the Yankees, he had a .244 batting average with 34 home runs and 86 RBIs in 109 games.

Following the trade to the Yankees, he had just 13 home runs and 37 RBIs in 44 games. Before the move to the Bronx, he had 21 home runs and 49 RBIs in 65 games with the Mariners.

In his career, he has a .263 batting average with 414 home runs and 1,242 RBIs in 1,916 games. He also has 365 doubles and 10 triples in 1,807 hits, while scoring 1,080 runs.
