A short time after being hired as the new Washington Redskins head coach, Ron Rivera began to put his coaching staff together. He has hired Jack Del Rio as the team’s new defensive coordinator, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

With this hire, Del Rio returns to coaching football. He had been out of football since being fired by the Oakland Raiders at the conclusion of the 2017 season.

Rivera picked Del Rio over his former defensive coordinator Steve Wilks, who was initially linked to Riverboat Ron. Wilks became available after the Cleveland Browns fired their entire coaching staff at the conclusion of the 2019 season.

Like Rivera, a lot of players love Del Rio. Previously, Rivera and Del Rio have been known for turning woeful defenses around.

This is Del Rio’s first defensive coordinator job since the 2014 season. He spent three seasons as the Denver Broncos defensive coordinator from 2012 through 2014.

Del Rio also served as the Carolina Panthers defensive coordinator in 2002.

He has coached the second-best defensive unit in the league twice during his coaching career. Del Rio previously accomplished this in 2002 with the Panthers, as he took the worst defensive unit in 2001 to the second-best one year later.

One decade later, he also took the Broncos 20th-best unit in 2011 and turned it into the second-best in 2012.

Rivera and Del Rio are taking over a team that went 3-13 during the 2019 season under former head coaches Jay Gruden and Bill Callahan. The Redskins had the 27th-best points against on the season with 27.2 points per game.

The Redskins gave up back-to-back 40-point-plus performances to end the season. Callahan’s defense allowed 88 points in their final two contests, including a season-high 47 points against the Dallas Cowboys on Dec. 29.

Only once this season did the Redskins defense allow 10 points or less. That was on Oct. 20 in heavy rain and mud in a 9-0 loss to the San Francisco 49ers.

With their woeful record, the Redskins will have the No. 2 overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. The team is expected to target Chase Young with that pick should be declare for the draft.

He has until Jan. 20th to make his decision known.
