The Dallas Cowboys have hired Mike McCarthy as the team’s new head coach. He replaces Jason Garrett.

Garrett was officially fired on Sunday night after much speculation over the course of the last week. A little more than 12 hours later, the Cowboys agreed to terms with McCarthy to lead the program in 2020.

The Cowboys were targeting head coaches with proven NFL experience that had success previously. With McCarthy, they get that, as he went 125-77-2 during his 13-year tenure with the Packers.

McCarthy also guided Green Bay to the Super Bowl Championship following the 2010 season. He had just three losing seasons in his 13-seasons.

The Packers defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers to win in Super Bowl XLV. Green Bay won 31-25 over Pittsburgh at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas on February 6, 2011.

He also went to the playoffs nine of his 13 seasons in Wisconsin. McCarthy also won 10 playoff games.

Under Garrett, the Cowboys had just four winning seasons in his 9 ½ seasons. Three of those four seasons, Dallas went to the playoffs.

He also had four 8-8 seasons as the leader of the team before his exit. Garrett guided the Cowboys to an 8-8 mark in his final season before being fired.

Now, as the Cowboys head coach McCarthy gets to coach an offensive attack that has three young stars. First, though, Dallas needs to re-signed quarterback Dak Prescott and wide receiver Amari Cooper to keep them together.

During his tenure with the Packers, there were question marks at running back and at defense. Now, with the Cowboys, he has a stud running back with Ezekiel Elliott and a good defense.
