He struggled in 2019 with a 1-8 record and a 6.40 ERA in 15 starts. He allowed 58 runs (51 earned runs), including 17 home runs on 85 hits over 71 2/3 innings.

Hernández had started 10 straight Opening Day starts before he was replaced in that role by manager Scott Servais. Marco Gonzales made the start in Tokyo, Japan.

Only six players in the history of the sport made 10 consecutive Opening Day starts. Hernández was the Mariners fifth starter in the rotation to begin the season.

He was hampered by a right shoulder strain last season. Despite being injured, he was able to get his 2,500th strikeout when he struck out Michael Chavis. Hernández was the sixth-youngest player to do it in MLB history.
