Basketball great Kobe Bryant killed in Calabasas

Basketball legend Kobe Bryant has been killed in a helicopter crash in Calabasas, Los Angeles count in Los Angeles, California. He was 41.

An official cause of death has not been announced yet. A medical examiner will determine that at a later date.

Bryant was one of five on board the helicopter when it went down around 10 am PST, according to the Los Angeles Times. The incident happened near Las Virgenes Road.

The plane crash also caused a brush fire, according to NBC 4i. The flames reached about an acre.

“We miss you already Kobe,” NFL great Tom Brady said in a tweet.

The authorities have scheduled a 5 pm EST press conference with the media. According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, Bryant and his 13-year-old daughter Gianna — whose nickname is GiGi — were on board the helicopter when it went down, as they were traveling to a travel basketball tournament.

Another parent and child was also on board, according to other media reports.

His last appearance in the public eye was on Saturday night in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was there to see LeBron James pass him in scoring on the all-time list.

Sometime overnight, Bryant returned home to Los Angeles.

Bryant retired from the NBA in 2016. He departed the game with 33,643 points.

James — one of the Lakers’ two stars with Anthony Davis — now has 33,655.
