The New York Knicks have fired President of Basketball Operations Steve Mills on Tuesday. The move comes two days before the league-wide NBA trade deadline.
With Mills gone, the Knicks are promoting Scott Perry to run their Basketball Operations for the time being. Perry was the team’s GM under Mills.
According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, the Knicks are targeting Toronto Raptors President of Basketball Operations Masai Ujiri. However, his contract is in the way of making that deal work.
He is presently signed through the 2020-21 season. And, according to Wojnarowski, the Knicks are refusing to give up draft compensation to make a deal work.
The NBA Insider has already reporting that the Knicks have already interviewed a candidate to replace Mills. But Ujiri is the Knicks owner James Dolan’s top target.
Mills departure may have been in part due to their inability to recruit a top-level star to New York this past summer. And the team’s horrendous start to begin the season.
The Knicks have a 15-36 record during the 2019-20 season. Only two teams have worse records than New York in the entire Eastern Conference.
Those two teams are the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Atlanta Hawks. Both teams have 13-38 records.
