McGloin guides Guardians to win over Vipers

The New York Guardians won their first home game of the new re-launched XFL on Sunday. They defeated the Tampa Bay Vipers, 23-3, on Sunday afternoon at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

The Guardians are now 1-0 on the season. The Vipers fell to 0-1.

Guardians quarterback Matt McGloin went 15 of 29 for 182 yards. He also threw one touchdown pass.

Darius Victor had nine carries for 32 yards. Mekale McKay had three receptions for 58 yards.

“Offensively, there were a lot of flashes of how good we could be,” McGloin said. “We are really close to taking that next step. It’s always good to win especially at home.”

Vipers quarterback Aaron Murray struggled in his XFL debut. He went 16 of 34 for 231 yards. He also threw two interceptions.

Quinton Flowers, his backup, came in and went 1 of 2 for 37 yards.

De’Veon Smith had 16 carries for 79 yards. Daniel Williams had six receptions for 123 yards.

The Guardians outscored the Vipers 6-3 in the second half. Guardians cornerback Jamar Summers recovered a fumble by Nick Truesdell and returned it for a 13-yard touchdown.

Vipers’ Andrew Franks made a 23-yard field goal.

New York led 17-0 at halftime. McGloin scored on a one-yard rushing touchdown. Tim Cook III converted the one-yard rushing attempt for the 7-0 lead.

McGloin then hit Colby Pearson for a 12-yard touchdown reception. Cook III also converted the one-yard rushing attempt to make it 14-0.

Matthew McCrane also made a 49-yard field goal.
