Mookie Betts is finally a member of the Los Angeles Dodgers. It just took longer than originally planned.
On Tuesday night, it was reported that there was a three-team blockbuster deal that went down. The following day, due to concerns of one of the players that the Boston Red Sox were planning on receiving, the trade was on hold.
Several days later, the blockbuster deal was finalized. Betts and David Price are now members of the Dodgers. In addition, Los Angeles is also receiving $48 million to offset half of Price’s salary for the next three seasons.
The Red Sox will receive outfielder Alex Verdugo. In addition, Boston is receiving prospects Jeter Downs and Connor Wong from the Dodgers.
The Minnesota Twins — who reportedly pulled out of the agreement on Saturday — was back in the new three-way deal. Minnesota has received pitcher Kenta Maeda and prospect Luke Raley.
The Twins have also received $10 million from the Dodgers.
Brusdar Graterol — who is a member of the Twins organization — caused the trade to hold up. He previously had Tommy John surgery and there were concerns about his medical reports.
Graterol is now a member of the Dodgers instead of going to the Red Sox. In addition, the Dodgers have also received the 67th overall pick in June’s MLB Draft.
He missed two months of the 2019 season with shoulder problems. However, Graterol was throwing 100 mph by the end of the season.
MLPA president Tony Clark urged the teams to get the deal done soon. He said that it put “players’ lives in a state of limbo.”
