Blue Jays star Tony Fernández has passed away at 57

Former Toronto Blue Jays Star Tony Fernández has died, according to TSN. He was 57. 

An official cause of death has not been announced at this time. However, there were reports that suggest he was in the hospital earlier this month, as he battled kidney disease.

According to TSN, he was previously diagnosed with kidney disease in 2017. 

“My heart is so heavy at the loss of former teammate, friend, and Champion Tony Fernandez,” Todd Stottlemyre said on Twitter. “My prayers go out to his wife and their entire family. I will never forget this man. He influenced my life in a positive way. He made everyone around him better. RIP my brother.”

Fernández was a five-time All-Star in his career. He was also part of the Blue Jays team that defeated the Philadelphia Phillies to win the 1993 World Series.

The four-time Gold Glove winner played 17 seasons in Major League Baseball. Besides the Blue Jays, where he played 12 seasons, he also played for the San Diego Padres, New York Mets, Cleveland Indians, Cincinnati Reds, New York Yankees, and the Milwaukee Brewers.
