CBS Sports Department had a dilemma on their hands. Either, they’ll re-sign NFL analyst Tony Romo or let him walk.

ESPN was the main other suitor for Romo. They desperately wanted him for their Monday Night Football coverage.

Instead of letting the long-time Dallas Cowboys quarterback to leave, CBS inked him to the largest deal in TV history for an NFL analyst. In fact, it’s a massive deal.

He signed a 10-year, $180 million deal. Romo will make $18 million per season under this agreement.

That’s approximately $3.6 million per month. Romo will only be contractually to work from September through January under his deal.

Some years, he’ll work an extra week in February when CBS has the Super Bowl coverage. In 2021, CBS is the broadcast partner for the Super Bowl in Tampa, Florida.

According to the New York Post, during the negotiations, CBS considered Peyton Manning. However, like he has done previously with ESPN, Manning turned down an opportunity to be a broadcaster.

This is a huge pay raise for Romo. Only one-time in his football career that he made more than $18 million.

He also had two seasons where he made $17 million.

After retiring from football in April 2017, he signed a three-year agreement with CBS for their NFL coverage. He was reportedly making $3 million per season under his previous agreement.

He showed very quickly that he became the top analyst on NFL TV. Through his homework, he could forecast plays before they would even be run.

That means with his new agreement that begins with the 2020 season, he’s receiving a $15 million raise. In addition, he will continue to be partnered with Jim Nantz on CBS top NFL pairing.
