More than a year ago, the NCAA turned things into a free agency with select sports. Players can enter into a transfer portal – even seniors with at least one year of eligibility left or graduate transfers – and have contact with new coaches, before making their decision.

We’re going to look back on some decisions and see how their decision played out. In this story, we’re going to examine Jalen Hurts‘ decision.

Hurts elected to leave the Alabama Crimson Tide with one-year left of eligibility. Instead of going to a school within the Southeastern Conference, Hurts choose to attend the University of Oklahoma.

He had lost his starting job in his final season with the Crimson Tide to Tua Tagovailoa, who is expected to be a Top 5 pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. Yet, when Tagovailoa got hurt, head coach Nick Saban had to lean on Hurts to play a critical role in some games.

But during the 2019 season, Saban did not have that luxury, as Hurts was starring for the Sooners. He went 237 of 340 for a career-high 3,851 yards. Hurts also threw 32 touchdown passes and eight interceptions.

Oklahoma made it into the College Football Playoff. However, they were blown out 63-28 by the LSU Tigers in the Peach Bowl on Saturday, December 28, 2019, at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia in Hurts’ final game.

He went 15 of 31 for 217 yards in the loss. He also threw an interception.

Hurts could potentially be drafted in the upcoming NFL Draft. According to NFL.com, he is being compared to Tim Tebow.

Tebow had a short-lived NFL career with the Denver Broncos and the New York Jets. Now, the former football player is a prospect with the New York Mets.

When Hurts is drafted — the odds are very high that he’ll be drafted — it’ll bring a dual-threat quarterback to his new team’s depth chart. He had an impressive scouting combine, which helped his draft stock.

Despite his success at Alabama and Oklahoma, he is still a work in progress. And he only wants to be a quarterback at the next level – which could come back to bite him, but only time will tell.
