The Carolina Panthers and the Los Angeles Chargers have agreed to a trade featuring offensive linemen. However, the deal can not become official until the NFL’s new league year on March 18th.
The Panthers in this deal will acquire Russell Okung. In exchange, the Chargers will add Trai Turner.
When Okung officially joins the Panthers, he will be reunited with a familiar face. Offensive line coach Pat Meyer, who was previously Okung’s line coach with the Chargers, is a part of first-year head coach Matt Rhule’s coaching staff.
Meyer worked with the Chargers from 2017 through 2019. He reportedly was pulling for the trade.
With Okung, the Panthers are getting a top-flight offensive tackle, who can help protect Cam Newton, who is expected to be back in 2020. He is expected to be the team’s starting left tackle.
The Panthers are giving up a stud guard in Turner to the Chargers. He has gone to the Pro Bowl the last five seasons.
The 31-year-old Okung will make $13 million for the 2020 season. Turner — who will be 27-years-old in June — has two years left on his deal.
He is slated to make $8.5 million for the 2020 season. Turner then is expected to make $11 million in 2022 before being a free agent.
