This may be the first in the United States. But it may not be the last, as colleges and pro teams are concerned about the deadly coronavirus outbreak.
Chicago State University has said its men’s basketball team will not travel for two upcoming home games. Also, their women’s basketball team will not host two games, as well, according to the Associated Press.
The school said this was due to the well-being of its student-athletes. The school cited the spread of the coronavirus as the reason why they made this decision.
“Chicago State athletics views our decision as a reaffirmation of our commitment to the well-being, health and safety of our student athletes,” Chicago State athletic director Elliott Charles said in the statement.
The school’s men’s basketball team will not travel to Seattle, Washington to face Seattle University on Thursday. Nor will the team travel to Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah on Saturday.
On the same days, their women’s team will not host Seattle or Utah Valley at their Jones Convention Center.
The virus has hit the Unites States, especially the Seattle, Washington, where several people have already been diagnosed with it. There have been nine people, who have died from the coronavirus so far, according to the New York Times.
Most of those nine deaths came from a nursing home in the Seattle area.
There has been more than 93,000 people, who have been infected with the disease worldwide. Also, there have been more than 3,100 deaths with the majority of these deaths coming in China, where the disease started.
There have been 70 countries affected with this deadly disease.
Chicago State may not play in the WAC Tournament in Las Vegas, Nevada. The school said that they will make a decision on whether they will participate or not in the coming days.
In addition, they said they were looking at the travel plans, so the team, if they do play in the tournament, may not fly.
The men’s basketball team is 4-25 in the WAC. However, they are 0-14 in conference play.
The women’s basketball team is worse, as they have just one win on the season. They are 1-26 with the lone win coming in conference play (1-13).
