According to ESPN 710 Seattle’s John Clayton, the New York Jets are interested in signing free agent defensive end Jadeveon Clowney. He is still unsigned several weeks after the start of free agency.
In addition, another thing going against Clowney is the coronavirus pandemic that has the entire Unites States on lockdown in an attempt to stop the spread of this infectious virus. Besides the Jets, Clayton is reporting that the Tennessee Titans and the Seattle Seahawks are also interested in his services.
Clowney played for the Seahawks last season following a trade last year after beginning his career with the Houston Texans. Madden NFL previously hinted that Clowney would play the 2020 season with the Titans.
Clowney has reportedly lowered his asking price. Initially, he was reportedly seeking $20 million per season.
However, now the reported asking price is between $17-18 million. With his lowered asking price, it should entice other teams with cap space to consider him if they’re truly interested in adding his services.
The 27-year-old Rock Hill, South Carolina native has played the last six seasons in the NFL. He was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft by the Houston Texans.
In his first season with the Seahawks, he appeared in 13 games, including 11 starts. He had 31 tackles, including seven tackles for a loss and 13 quarterback hits.
He had a career-low 3.0 sacks, one interception, including a 27-yard interception return for a touchdown; four forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, including one returned for a touchdown, and three pass deflections.
In his career, the highly-talented defensive end has made 75 appearances, including 66 starts in his career. He has had 236 tackles, including 71 tackles for a loss and 80 quarterback hits.
Clowney also has 32.0 sacks, including a career-best 9.5 sacks in 2017, one interception, including a 27-yard interception returned for a touchdown, eight forced fumbles, eight fumble recoveries, including three returned for touchdowns; and 14 pass deflections.
If he does sign with the Titans, four players had more sacks than Clowney in 2019. These players include Harold Landry — who led the team with 9.0 sacks, Jurrell Casey and Kamalei Correa were second on the team with 5.0 sacks each. Logan Ryan was third with 4.5 sacks.
If he re-signs with the Seahawks, only two players had more sacks than Clowney on the team. Rasheem Green led the team with 4.0 sacks, while Quinton Jefferson had 3.5 sacks.
Clowney was tied with Bobby Wagner and Mychal Kendricks with the 3.0 sacks.
If he signs with the Titans, there are several players, who had more sacks than he had in 2019. This group includes Whitney Mercilus, who led the team with 7.5 sacks on the season.
J.J. Watt – who missed half the season with an injury – had 4.0 sacks. Brennan Scarlett and Jacob Martin also had 3.5 sacks each on the season.
