“He was a great player with a bright smile and an infectious personality,” Thundering Herd head coach Doc Holliday said. “You couldn’t have a bad day around him. We’ll miss you, 52.”

Brooks played for the Thundering Herd from 2012 through the 2014 season. He began his journey at Marshall as a walk-on transfer.

He began his college football experience at Fairmont State in 2010. He missed the 2011 season due to the mandated NCAA transfer role.

“It was very disappointing, honestly, to not have any [major college] offers at first,’’ Brooks said in a 2012 interview with HerdZone.com. “I was looking for a scholarship and it didn’t happen that way. Now I’m happy I got a chance here. It’s been great. It’s what I expected. It’s where I wanted to be all along. I finally got to Division I where I wanted, and now I work hard to prove I belong. You just keep working and see what happens.’’
