Luke Kuechly is employed by the Carolina Panthers once again. However, this time around, it’s not as a professional football player.
Kuechly has been hired as a pro scout by the Panthers. The 29-year-old retired this off-season after playing for the team.
When he was a player and healthy, he was one of the best defensive players in the league. However, he has battled injuries in his career.
“During the season, it’ll be player evaluation and then advance scouting stuff,” Kuechly said of his new gig. “So if we play a team next week, we’ve got to get everything set up and ready to go, so when the coaches come in on Monday, they’re not starting from square one.”
Before this scouting opportunity, Kuechly admitted that he was considering going into coaching. That may be an opportunity that he considers down the road as this scouting job may be one of his many jobs outside of being a player.
He was the ninth overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft. He went to seven straight Pro Bowls from 2013 through 2019.
Kuechly was also the 2019 NFL Defensive Player of the Year in 2013. He also was the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2012.
He was a five-time first-team All-Pro. Kuechly also was named second-team All-Pro in 2016 and 2019.
In his final campaign, he appeared in 16 games, including 16 starts. He had 144 tackles, including four tackles for a loss and five quarterback hits. He also had one safety.
Kuechly also had two interceptions and 12 pass deflections.
In his eight-year career with the Panthers, he appeared in 118 games, including 118 starts. He had 1,092 tackles, including 75 tackles for a loss and 31 quarterback hits. He also had one safety.
Kuechly had 12.5 sacks, 18 tackles, including one returned for a touchdown; seven forced fumbles, nine fumble recoveries, and 66 pass deflections.
