Fran Dunphy named acting AD at Temple

Fran Dunphy has retired from coaching. But on Wednesday, he returned to college athletics.

He was named the Acting Athletic Director for Temple University. Former Athletic Director Patrick Kraft, who will become the Boston College Eagles Athletic Director on July 1st.

“Although this is a new role for Fran Dunphy, the truth is that he’s been a leader at Temple, in Philadelphia and in the nation for decades,” Temple President Richard M. Englert said. “From the court to the classroom, to his advocacy and philanthropic efforts, Fran has time and again proven his dedication to our university and our city, and we look forward to seeing the positive impact he will undoubtedly make as acting director of athletics.”

Dunphy retired from coaching following the 2018-19 season. He was replaced at Temple by Aaron McKie.

During his long coaching career, Dunphy is the all-time leader in wins in the Philadelphia Big 5. He was the Owls head coach for 13 seasons before retiring.

He guided the team to 270 wins, including 10 postseason appearances, and eight NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship appearances in his time as the leader of the men’s basketball program.

“Temple called, Dick Englert called, and asked me if I would take on this role,” Dunphy said. “I said I’m happy to serve in any way. When Temple calls and asks, my tendency is to say ‘yes.’”
