Noose suspect(s) looking at lifetime ban from NASCAR

NASCAR President Steve Phelps is adamant that the person or persons responsible for putting a noose in the Richard Petty Motorsports stall will be banned. Phelps said the person will receive a lifetime ban from the sport.

Phelps is not mixing words. He doesn’t care if it was an owner, driver, crew member, track employee, or security person, you’re done from the sport.

“This is a very serious act and we take it as such,” Phelps said. “We will do everything in our power to make sure whoever has committed this act comes to justice and comes to light.

“Unequivocally, they will be banned from this sport for life. There’s no room for this, at all. We won’t tolerate it and they won’t be here. I don’t care who they are, they will not be here.”

A noose was found in the stall by one of Richard Petty Motorsports crew members. It was not discovered by Wallace.

In fact, Phelps was the one, who told Wallace about the noose.

“It was a difficult moment for Bubba and for me,” Phelps said. “But he’s handled it with the grace that he has handled everything that has happened over the last few weeks.”

NASCAR and the FBI is investigating the incident. There could be a criminal investigation into the incident, as the person or persons involved may be charged with a crime, possibly a hate crime.

Wallace — who has an African-American mother and a white father — has been outspoken since the beginning of June. He helped NASCAR ban the Confederate flag.

On June 10th, NASCAR allowed that they were banning the flag at all of their events. This weekend, including on Monday, people have been driving past the venue with their Confederate flags.

An individual or group may have been responsible for flying a Confederate flag over the track on Sunday. The banner, which included the flag, also said ‘Defund NASCAR.’
