Texas Rangers outfielder Joey Gallo has tested positive for the coronavirus, COVID-19. Gallo will not participate with his teammates for the time being as he deals with this positive test.
He is reportedly asymptomatic, according to Rangers President and General Manager Jon Daniels. He also said that the right fielder is also ‘feeling good.’
Gallo will now need two consecutive negative tests before he is allowed to return to the team.
“I feel like he should be pretty much good to go once he is cleared,” Daniels said after revealing Gallo’s positive test result in a Zoom call with the media.
The Rangers said that Gallo first received a positive test on June 29th after being initially tested on July 27th. Dallas Morning News Ranger beat writer Evan Grant is reporting that Gallo then underwent a nasal test.
The nasal test came back to be negative. As a result, Gallo then underwent another saliva test on July 2nd.
On Sunday, the positive test came back. He must now pass two negative tests 24 hours apart from each other.
The 26-year-old Henderson, Nevada native has spent his entire career with the Rangers. He was their first-round pick in the 2012 MLB Draft.
He has been on the Major League roster for the Rangers the last five seasons. In 2019, he went to his first All-Star game despite only playing in 70 games on the season.
