Capco Contractors Top Fuel Dragster pilot Steve Torrence is the No. 1 category in his class on Saturday at the E3 Spark Plugs NHRA Nationals at Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis in Brownsburg, Indiana. This is Torrence’s 25th No. 1 qualifier in his career.
Torrence went 3.779 at 321.19 mph in his 11,000 horsepower dragster. The Kilgore, Texas native will face ageless driver Luigi Novelli in the first-round of eliminations.
He will attempt to win his 38th career win on Sunday.
“Those bad-to-the-bone Capco Boys made it fly during Q2 and we’re headed into race day No. 1,” Torrence said. “Now the fun begins. You can’t take anyone lightly. If we make a mistake, Luigi has proved he’s capable of just stepping up and slapping us. That said, I’m just glad to be back racing. I’ll be even better once we can get all our fans back in the mix.”
The NHRA returned on Saturday for the first time since the NHRA Arizona Nationals on February 23rd at Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park in Chandler, Arizona. The teams were in Gainesville, Florida in March when their season was halted due to the coronavirus.
Torrence won the last Top Fuel race before the hiatus.
