Formula One superstar Lewis Hamilton was able to capture his first win of the 2020 season on Sunday. He won the Steiermark Grand Prix at the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg, Austria.
It took Hamilton two races to secure his first win of the season. In the first race of the season, the Mercedes AMG Petronas driver finished fourth.
Hamilton finished the race in an hour and 22 minutes. He won the race by a large margin, as his margin of victory was 13.7 seconds.
“I just want to say a big thank you to my team and everyone back at the factory,” Hamilton said. “This has been …. what a weird year it is but it is great to be back up here and to be driving and to be driving with this kind of performance. The team did a fantastic job with the strategy and then it was just for me to keep it together, stay off the kerbs and bring it home.”
With the win, Hamilton is just six wins shy of tying the legendary Michael Schumacher.
Followed behind Hamilton was his Mercedes AMG Petronas teammate Valtteri Bottas, who finished second. Max Verstappen finished third.
“I tried, but we’re just a bit too slow, so I pushed as hard as I could and also when Valtteri was trying to pass me, I tried to make it a bit difficult. I knew he was going to get by one lap later, but it was at least fun because the rest of the race was pretty boring. A podium is good, but still a lot of work to do.”
Three drivers were not able to finish the race. Two of the drivers were Ferrari drivers in Charles Leclerc and Sebastian Vettel. The other driver was Esteban Ocon.
