There was some rumors that the Capco Contractors Top Fuel Racing operation would not be at the two special Indy events. Steve Torrence put an end to that speculation on July 1st saying that the team will be entered for the race.
The Capco Contractors team won the first Top Fuel race back at the E3 Spark Plugs NHRA Nationals at Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis in Brownsburg, Indiana. Billy Torrence won his six Top Fuel wally on Sunday.
Torrence defeated Doug Kalitta in the final round at the special Indianapolis race. This was a rematch of the 2019 Chevrolet Performance U.S. Nationals, which Kalitta won.
This was the NHRA’s return to action after nearly five months away from competition. The pro drivers have been on hiatus since the NHRA Arizona Nationals at Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park in Chandler, Arizona in February.
The Kilgore, Texas native trailed off of the starting line, as he went 0.056 to Kalitta’s 0.018 reaction time. Despite trailing off of the line, Torrence was able to make up the difference and to win the race.
He went 3.802 at 322.34 mph to receive the Wally. Kalitta went 3.852 at 307.86 mph in the losing effort.
Before this final round appearance, Kalitta held a 4-2 advantage over Torrence in prior events. He also held a 1-0 advantage over Torrence in the final round, which was in the aforementioned Chevrolet Performance U.S. Nationals.
Torrence won by race by 0.0128 seconds, or approx. 6 feet. This is Torrence’s first win of the season.
