Ford Motorcraft/Quick Lane Funny Car pilot Bob Tasca III was forced to miss the first Indy event in this double-header in back-to-back weekends. The Hope, Rhode Island native tested positive for the coronavirus and was replaced on an interim basis by Jonnie Lindberg.
Tasca III returned on Saturday and piloted his Funny Car to the No. 1 qualifier at the Lucas Oil NHRA Summernationals at Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis in Brownsburg, Indiana. He went 3.991 at 319.07 mph in his Ford Mustang.
“Welcome back to NHRA Drag Racing,” Tasca III said. “I’ll tell you, being No. 17 going into that last session, but I just have so much confidence in [crew chief] Mike Neff and Jon Schaffer. You just don’t want to screw it up. Once it went past half-track that thing was singing.”
Tasca III will face Hot 4 Teacher Funny Car pilot Alex Miladinovich, who made the trek from California to compete, in the first-round of eliminations.
MD Anderson Cancer Center Funny Car pilot Tommy Johnson Jr. is the No. 2 qualifier. The Don Schumacher Racing pilot, who resides in Avon, Indiana, went 4.017 at 300.86 mph.
Johnson Jr. went to the final round last weekend, before losing to his teammate Matt Hagan.
Levi, Ray, and Shoup Inc. Funny Car pilot Tim Wilkerson is the No. 3 qualifier. The Springfield, Illinois rounded out the Top 3 with a 4.034 pass at 317.05 mph.
