Chase Elliott was successful at the road course at Watkins Glen International. He had two wins at the Upstate New York facility.
Due to the coronavirus pandemic, Watkins Glen International was removed from the schedule. The event was moved to Florida.
Despite the move, Elliott won the Go Bowling 235 at Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach, Florida. This was the inaugural road course race at the famed track.
“I had a phenomenal car. I don’t think I did anything special today,” Elliott said.
This was Elliott’s eighth win of his Cup Series career. Four of his eight wins have come on road course.
Besides winning this Daytona road course event and at Watkins Glen International, he also won on a road course at the Roval at Charlotte Motor Speedway in 2019. His non-road course wins have come at Charlotte, Dover, Kansas, and Talladega.
The Dawsonville, Georgia native held off Denny Hamlin to get the win. Hamlin hit Elliott on his bumper during the final restart, but the FedEx driver did not have enough to pass the NAPA Auto Parts driver.
“I kept him honest there,” Hamlin said. “He had such good drive off (the corners) I couldn’t do anything with him.”
Martin Truex Jr. finished third in the race. This was the fifth straight race, dating back to Kansas, that he finished third in a Cup Series race after having a 29th finish at Fort Worth.
