Buccaneers sign free agent Leonard Fournette

By Anthony Caruso III | Publisher

Free agent running back Leonard Fournette wasted little time to find a new home. And it’s staying put in Florida.

Fournette signed a one-year contract with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He was released by the Jacksonville Jaguars on Tuesday after they failed to find a trade partner.

Financial terms of his new deal were not disclosed. By signing with the Buccaneers, he has to relocate approx. 4 hours from Jacksonville to Tampa, Florida for the upcoming season.

The fourth-year back joins a stacked offense for the Buccaneers, who may be the favorite to win the Super Bowl. After signing with Tampa Bay, Fournette is projected to be the team’s starting running back.

Tampa Bay’s offense also includes Tom Brady, arguably the greatest quarterback in NFL history, who signed with the team in the off-season, will be the team’s projected starting quarterback. Chris Godwin and Mike Evans is the starting wide receivers, while Rob Gronkowski, who was acquired in a trade, is the team’s projected starting tight end.

Barring final transactions that will come in the final days before the start of the new season next week, the Bucs also have a lot of depth, as LeSean McCoy, Ronald Jones II, Ke’Shawn Vaughn, Dare Ogunbowale, and Raymond Calais are listed as depth chart running backs. Not all of these running backs will remain — probably McCoy and Jones II, and maybe one other — before the 53-man roster kicks in.

The 25-year-old back appeared in 15 games, including 15 starts in 2019. He had 265 carries for 1,152 yards and three touchdowns.

Fournette also had 76 receptions for 522 yards.

In his young NFL career, he has appeared in 36 games, including 36 starts. He has 666 carries for 2,631 yards and 17 touchdowns.

As a receiver, he has made 134 receptions for 1,009 yards and two touchdowns.
