The Arizona Cardinals acquired star wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins. Now, he’s tied to the organization for the next five seasons. Hopkins has signed a two-year extension with the Cardinals.
His new deal—which he negotiated himself—is worth $54.5 million. He will earn $27.25 million for the 2023 and 2024 seasons. The team also has $42.75 million due at signing.
Hopkins was acquired in a blockbuster deal with the Houston Texans. In exchange for the star wide receiver, the Houston Texans received running back David Johnson.

Hopkins’s package also included several draft picks. The Texans reportedly traded Hopkins because they thought he wanted a new deal.
Bill O’Brien, the team’s head coach and de facto GM, decided he could use the money elsewhere instead of putting it into one player. This was Hopkins’s first deal since the Texans signed him to a five-year deal in 2017.
He is slated to make $1.5 million in base salary for the 2020 season in his first year with the Cardinals. Hopkins also received $5.5 million in a signing bonus.
In 2021, Hopkins is slated to make $4.75 million in terms of a base salary. He then will receive $5.5 million as a signing bonus. There’s also $2.25 million in play due to an option.
In the final year of his original deal in 2022, Hopkins will receive $6.65 million. He’ll also get a $5.5 million signing bonus, as well as a $10.65 million roster bonus.
This 2022 season, there will also be a $2.25 million option, as well.
The Cardinals, before the two-year deal kicks in, have an out that could turn it into a three-year, $60 million deal. Arizona would be responsible for a $15.5 million dead cap hit if they moved on from his deal.
In 2023, his base salary will be $19.45 million with an additional $5.5 million in a signing bonus. Then, in the final year of this two-year deal, he is slated to make $14.9 million.
Like 2023, he’ll also have a $5.5 million signing bonus.
Hopkins was a first-round draft pick by the Texans in the 2013 NFL Draft. He spent seven seasons in Houston.
He appeared in 111 games, including 111 starts. He had 646 receptions for 8,753 receiving yards and 54 touchdowns.

Hopkins also has three carries for 11 yards.
He has had three straight 1,000 receiving yards. In 2018, he had a career-high 1,572 receiving yards in a season.
