The Calgary Flames have removed the interim tag off of Geoff Ward’s title. He is now the team’s permanent head coach.

Ward took over, as the interim head coach on Nov. 26, 2019 when former head coach Bill Peters was being investigated by the team. The team’s General Manager Brad Treliving made Ward the interim leader for their Nov. 27th game against the Buffalo Sabres.

Peters was being investigated for an alleged racism and assault allegation by a former player. He then resigned from his coaching job on Nov. 29th and Ward took over as the team’s bench leader for the rest of the season.

After taking over for Peters, Ward guided the team up until March when the sports world shut down due to the coronavirus pandemic. Once the league came back in the summer, he guided the team to a 24-15-3 record in 42 games.

The Flames were able to secure a playoff spot under Ward. However, they were eliminated in the first-round of the playoffs by the Dallas Stars.

This will be Ward’s first full season as an NHL head coach when the league resumes with the 2020-21 season. Before being named the interim head coach, he was the Flames Associate Head Coach.

Ward has previous coaching experience as an assistant coach with the New Jersey Devils and the Boston Bruins. During the 2010-11 season with the Bruins, he was a part of the coaching staff that won the Stanley Cup.

Ward does have previous head coaching experience. He was previously the head coach of the Adler Mannheim in Germany’s Deutsche Eishockey Liga’s league.

He also was a head coach of the Iserlohn Rooters in the Deutsche Eishockey Liga. Ward also was the bench leader for EC Bad Nauheim in Germany’s second-division, as well.

He previously led the Kitchener Rangers and the Guelph Storm in the Ontario Hockey League. Plus, he was the head coach of the Hamilton Bulldogs, the Toronto Roadrunners, and the Edmonton Roadrunners in the American Hockey League.
