Instead, he has elected to accept another job in the NBA. The Chicago Bulls have hired Donovan as their new head coach.

Donovan replaces former coach Jim Boylen, who was let go at the end of the season. Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

“We are very pleased to welcome Billy and his family to the Chicago Bulls. The success that he has sustained throughout his coaching career puts him on a different level,” said Chicago Bulls Executive Vice President – Basketball Operations Artūras Karnišovas. “We feel his ability to help his players reach their potential, both individually and collectively, will mesh well with our roster. Whether as a player or as a coach, he has won everywhere his career has taken him, and we hope that will continue here in Chicago.”
The 55-year-old Donovan saw his contract with the Oklahoma City Thunder expire at the end of the season. Both the Thunder and Donovan elected to go their separate ways rather than attempting to work out an extension.
Donovan was the Thunder’s head coach for five seasons. He guided the team to the playoffs in four of the five seasons.
As an NBA head coach, he is 243-157 in 400 games. However, in the playoffs, he is 18-23 in 41 games.
“I want to thank Jerry, Michael, Artūras, and Marc for the opportunity to coach the Chicago Bulls,” Donovan said. “I also want to thank them for the time and effort they put into this hiring process. I’m excited to partner with Artūras as we work together on behalf of this historic franchise.”
