Two decades. That’s nearly how long it took the Miami Marlins to get back to the postseason. Their last appearance was in the 2003 postseason.
Now, in the ever-crazy 2020 calendar year, the Marlins are going back to the extra stanza in the season.
The Marlins defeated the New York Yankees 4-3 in the 10th inning on Friday night at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, New York. This clinched the Marlins postseason opportunity.

“I think this is a good lesson for everyone,” Marlins manager Don Mattingly said following the 4-3 win against the Yankees. “It really goes back to the players believing.”
It also was helpful that the Philadelphia Phillies were defeated by the Tampa Bay Rays on Friday when the Phillies bullpen blew another lead. The Marlins owned the tiebreaker over the Phillies — and helped them clinch the spot.
Marlins CEO Derek Jeter was able to clinch his first playoff appearance since purchasing part-ownership of the team. Jeter spent his entire playing career with the Yankees — and played several seasons at new Yankee Stadium before retiring in 2014.
The win over the Yankees snapped a 17-year playoff skid for the Marlins. In fact, the last-time the team went to the postseason, they went on to win the World Series.
In the 2003 World Series, the Marlins defeated the Yankees — with Jeter — in six games. Miami won the series 4-2.

The Marlins will play in their first playoff game since Game 6 in the 2003 World Series on Wednesday, September 30th. Miami is the first team in MLB history to clinch a postseason spot a year after a 100-loss season.
“I can’t contain the tears, because it’s a lot of grind, a lot of passion.” Marlins shortstop Miguel Rojas said. “It wasn’t just the virus. Last year, we lost 100 games. But we came out this year with the hope everything was going to be better. When we had the outbreak, the guys, who got an opportunity to help the organization, thank you for everything you did.”
