Israel Adesanya and Paulo Costa has had bad blood with each other for some time. The two UFC competitors squared off at UFC 253.
Adesanya stopped Costa at the Flash Forum by TKO (Punches and Elbows) in the second-round in Yas Island in Abu Dhabi. The fight was stopped at 3:59 of the second round.
It’ll be interesting to see who UFC President Dana White puts up against Adesanya next. He defeated No. 1 contender Robert Whittaker and the No. 2 contender Costa.
Besides Whittaker and Costa, Adesanya also defeated Yoel Romero, who is the fifth-ranked middleweight. He’s also defeated Derek Brunson and Kelvin Gastelum — who are the seventh and eight ranked middleweights.
Following the fight, Adesanya said that he would like to fight Jared Cannonier next if he can get past Robert Whittaker in their fight. Presently, Cannonier — who Adesanya said he DMed following the fight — is the third-ranked contender.
The Nigerian — who resides in New Zealand now — has improved to 20-0 in his MMA career. Adesanya retained his Middleweight Championship belt with the win.
“The Last Stylebender” improved to 9-0 in the UFC. This was his fourth knockout win in the UFC, while the other five wins have come by decision.
The 31-year-old has never had a submission win in his career. Adesanya has knocked out 15 opponents and won five by decision.
Costa dropped his first fight in his 14th career professional bouts. He’ll now try to rebound when he returns to the Octagon down the road.
Before this loss, Costa had won his last five bouts vs. UFC opponents.
