Alabama’s Jaylen Waddle suffers season-ending injury

Alabama Crimson Tide wide receiver Jaylen Waddle has been lost for the rest of the season. He has suffered a season-ending broken ankle against the Tennessee Volunteers at Neyland Stadium in Knoxville, Tennessee.

He was injured on the first play of the game. This is a devastating loss for the Crimson Tide.

Head coach Nick Saban will have to have another player step up in his place for the remainder of the season.

“He’s out. He’s out. He’s out for the year. It’s a shame because the guy’s a great player,” Saban told CBS Sports’ Jamie Erdahl. “It’s exciting for college football to see a guy play like that. I hate it. He gets hurt on a play like that — you know, you’re not supposed to bring the ball out when you’re that deep in the end zone. But he’s a great player, so you got to let him use his judgement.”

When he received the opening kickoff, he ran to the left. Then, he was tackled by Kenneth George.

His right ankle got caught up underneath George, as the two were heading to the ground. Despite being hampered with an injury, he hopped to the sideline.

Once there, he was helped to the locker room. He was eventually seen going into an ambulance in the first quarter.

This is the second straight year that the Crimson Tide has had to deal with a star player on offense going down with a season-ending injury. Nearly one-year ago, then-quarterback Tua Tagovailoa suffered a hip injury against the Mississippi State Bulldogs.

The junior — who was on path to be a top receiver in the 2021 NFL Draft — has had 25 receptions for 557 yards. He also had four touchdown receptions.

Waddle also had three carries for 12 yards.

At Alabama, he has had 103 receptions for 1,965 yards and 17 touchdowns. He also has had four carries for 17 yards.
