The King, North Carolina native went 6.729 at 199.88 mph at the 33nd annual Mopar Express Lane NHRA SpringNationals presented by Pennzoil on Saturday at Houston Raceway Park in Baytown, Texas. He now has five No. 1 qualifiers during the 2020 season.
In addition, he set both ends of the track record with the pass. Smith now has 43 No. 1 qualifiers in his career.
This was the Pro Stock Motorcycle’s first competition at the venue since 2013. Hector Arana was the last No. 1 qualifier at the facility when he went 6.856 at 193.49 mph, according Drag Race Central.
Arana was not on the entry list for this weekend. He said earlier this year that the Gatornationals was going to be his final race, then the coronavirus hit and changed things.
He has competed in the past few races at Gainesville, St. Louis, and Dallas. Will we see him out at a track again? Who knows.
Vance & Hines Harley-Davidson Pro Stock Motorcycle rider Angelle Sampey was the No. 2 qualifier. The Louisiana native went 6.789 at 198.88 mph.
Vance & Hines Harley-Davidson Pro Stock Motorcycle rider Eddie Krawiec is the No. 3 qualifier. The Indiana native went 6.799 at 197.48 mph.
