Maryland’s Tagovailoa shines in Terps win over Minnesota

The Maryland Terrapins won their first game of the season in heart-breaking fashion. The Terrapins defeated the Minnesota Golden Gophers, 45-44, on Friday night at Capital One Field at Maryland Stadium in College Park, Maryland.

With the win, the Terrapins improved to 1-1 on the season. The Golden Gophers fell to 0-2 on the season.

This was the first collegiate start for Terrapins quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa. In the off-season, Tagovailoa transferred to the school after beginning his collegiate experience with the Alabama Crimson Tide.

Tagovailoa went 26 of 35 for 394 yards. He also had three touchdown passes and one interception.

Jake Funk had 21 carries for 216 yards and a touchdown. Jeshaun Jones had three receptions for 103 yards and a touchdown.

Golden Gophers quarterback Tanner Morgan went 10 of 15 for 189 yards. He also had one touchdown pass.

Mohamed Ibrahim had 41 carries for 207 yards and four touchdowns. Chris Autman-Bell had four receptions for 112 yards and a touchdown.

Funk had the aforementioned running touchdown for the Terrapins. Tagovailoa also had two rushing touchdowns. 

Jones, Dontay Demus Jr., and Funk caught touchdown receptions. Joseph Petrino booted a field goal.

Ibrahim had four touchdowns for the Golden Gophers. Seth Green also scored a rushing touchdown. 

Autman-Bell caught the lone touchdown for Minnesota. Brock Walker also made a field goal.
