Utah State Aggies have fired head football coach Gary Andersen. He lasted just 16 games in his second stint at the school.
He replaces Matt Wells before the start of the 2019 season. Wells left to become the Texas Tech Red Raiders head coach.
“After a thorough analysis on the current state of our football team, we believe a change at head coach is in the best interest of our program moving forward,” Utah State Vice President and Director of Athletics John Hartwell said in a statement. “The continued success and development of Aggie football is a priority and we want to make sure we are regular contenders for the Mountain West Championship.

“On behalf of Utah State Athletics, I want to express my appreciation to Gary Andersen for all he has done for our football program. We wish him, Stacey and their family all the best going forward, and they will always be part of our Aggie family.”
Andersen has been replaced by Assistant Head Coach/Co-Defensive Coordinator Frank Maile. He will finish the rest of the season.
This is the second-time that Maile has served as interim Head Coach for the Aggies. In 2008, he served as interim Head Coach for the team’s win in the New Mexico Bowl.
Anderson was 0-3 with the Aggies this season. All three games were losses by at least 25 points.
The Mountain West Conference got a late start to their season due to the coronavirus pandemic. The Aggies did not begin their season until October 24th.
In the two combined seasons in 2019 and 2020, Andersen guided the Aggies to a 7-9 mark. Utah State went 7-6 in 2019.
Andersen previously was a head coach at the school from 2009 through 2012. He had a career-best 11-2 mark during the 2012 season.
He’s only had three winning seasons in his head coaching career. Andersen went 19-7 with the Wisconsin Badgers in 2013 and 2014.
His first season with the Badgers, he guided the team to a 9-4 record. The following season, he went 10-3.

Overall, Andersen is 63-70 as a head coach. He was 33-33 with the Aggies.
Andersen also was 7-23 with the Oregon State Beavers. And went 4-7 with the Southern Utah Thunderbirds.
“We will start an immediate national search to find the best candidate to lead Utah State football going forward,” added Hartwell.
