Chicago White Sox first baseman José Abreu has been named the 2020 American League MVP. He is the 10th former American League Rookie of the Year to win the MVP.
Another first baseman, Freddie Freeman, won the 2020 National League MVP.

Abreu previously won the AL Rookie of the Year in 2014. Fred Lynn in 1975 and Ichiro Suzuki in 2001 are the only players to win both awards in one season.

This is the fifth time a member of the White Sox organization has won the AL MVP. He joins Nellie Fox in 1959, Dick Allen in 1972, and Frank Thomas in 1993 and 1993.
“That was a very special moment,’’ he said through an interpreter.
Abreu is the first American League MVP first-baseman since Justin Morneau in 2006. Besides Thomas and Abreu, Rod Carew, Jimmie Foxx, Hank Greenberg, Lou Gehrig, Boog Powell, Don Mattingly, Mo Vaughn, and Jason Giambi also were first baseman that won the award.
