The Florida Panthers have announced an historic hire. Just days after the Miami Marlins made an historic hire by hiring Kim Ng as GM, the Panthers made a first-time hire, as well.
The Panthers have hired Brett Peterson as the team’s assistant GM. He is the first black person to hold this role in NHL history.

Peterson has ties to some in the Panthers organization. Bill Zito is the Panthers GM.
“It’s going to be exciting times. I think other people are going to realize that things are possible, and that they should be,” Peterson said. “There hasn’t been this type of opportunity yet, so I’m happy that we can hopefully create some more.”
Both men previously worked together when they were sports agents with Acme Sports in Chicago, Illinois.
Another sports agent has been hired by Zito. He added Paul Krepelka, who will also serve as assistant GM, like Peterson.
“If it means that we’re expanding opportunities for people in hockey, then I’m humbled. But this was a hockey hire,” Zito told ESPN on Tuesday. “Hockey is such a great game. We need to make it accessible. I’m hopeful that maybe someone else can get a chance.”
He comes to the Panthers after being with the Wasserman Media Group in Los Angeles. Peterson worked for the sports marketing agency before this hire came along.
