Lions promote Darrell Bevell to interim head coach

The Detroit Lions have promoted offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell to interim head coach. He replaces Matt Patricia, who was fired by the team.

This is Bevell’s first head coaching opportunity. He is taking over a team that is 4-7 overall.

His first game as interim head coach is on December 6th against the Chicago Bears.

The Lions have dropped their last two games. They were beaten down by the Houston Texans on Thanksgiving Day in a 41-25 loss at Ford Field.

Days earlier, the Carolina Panthers beat the Lions 20-0 on November 20th.

Their wins have come against the Arizona Cardinals, Jacksonville Jaguars, Atlanta Falcons, and the Washington Football Team. Their last win came in a 30-27 win against the WFT on November 15th.

They also have losses to the Minnesota Vikings, Indianapolis Colts, New Orleans Saints, Green Bay Packers, and the Bears.

Before being the Lions interim head coach, he had been with the team since 2019 as their offensive coordinator.

He was the Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator from 2011 through 2017. Bevell also was the Vikings offensive coordinator from 2006 through 2010.

Before being an offensive coordinator, he was the Packers quarterbacks coach from 2003 through 2005. He also was the Packers assistant quarterbacks coach from 2000 through 2002.

Bevell spent two seasons as the Connecticut Huskies wide receivers coach in 1998 and 1999. He also spent one season as a graduate assistant coach with the Iowa State Cyclones in 1997.

His coaching career began at Westmar University as their passing game coordinator and quarterbacks coach in 1996.
