Former college football and NFL head coach Ray Perkins has passed away. He was 79.
An official cause of death has not been announced yet. He reportedly passed away on Wednesday morning.
He passed away three days after his 79th birthday.

“Ray Perkins was a great friend and an outstanding football coach who served The University of Alabama with true class and integrity,” Crimson Tide head coach Nick Saban said Wednesday. “Coach Perkins was a great leader who had a tremendous impact on the game of football at all levels. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his wife, Lisa, and his children Tony, Mike, Rachael, and Shelby.”
After playing for the Crimson Tide, he went into the coaching profession. He served as an assistant coach with the Mississippi State Bulldogs in 1973.
Then, he was the New England Patriots wide receivers coach from 1974 through 1977. In 1978, he was hired by the San Diego Chargers as their offensive coordinator.
One year later, he was hired by the New York Giants as their head coach in 1979. He was with the team through the 1982 season.
Once he left the Giants, he returned to his alma mater, where he served as the head coach from 1983 through 1986.
He also was the Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach from 1987 through 1990. After a season away from the game, he returned as the Arkansas State Red Wolves head coach in 1992.
The next season after coaching at Arkansas State, he spent several seasons as the Patriots’ head coach from 1993 through 1996. He was named the Oakland Raiders offensive coordinator in 1997.

Perkins returned to the NFL in 1999 as the Cleveland Browns tight ends coach. He also spent two seasons in 2013 and 2014 as the Jones County Junior College head football coach.
In his final position, he was a volunteer assistant coach in 2014 with Oak Grove High School in Mississippi.
