The Carolina Panthers fired their general manager Marty Hurney on Monday morning. He was in the role since the 2002 season.
Hurney departs due to “philosophical differences” with team owner David Tepper.
“I notified Marty that we would not be extending his contract beyond the 2020 season,” Tepper said. “This was a difficult decision. Marty has been a valuable member of our franchise and there is no way to convey my level of respect for him. We sincerely appreciate his hard work over 19 seasons and wish him well moving forward.”

His contract was set to expire in June 2021. However, the team elected to begin the process to find a new GM to lead the team forward.
Presently, the Panthers are 4-10 under first-year head coach Matt Rhule. If the team loses its next two games, they’re going to have a very high draft pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.
Hurney was the Panthers’ GM from 2002 through 2012. Then again from 2017 through 2020.
Under his leadership, the team made four playoff appearances and two Division titles. Also, the team won the NFC Championship to play in Super Bowl XXXVIII.
Unfortunately for Panthers fans, they were defeated by the Denver Broncos. He was also responsible for drafting former cornerstones Cam Newton as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft.

One year later, he drafted former cornerstone Luke Kuechly.
“I want to thank Dave and Nicole for the opportunity to be a part of this organization over the last three seasons,” Hurney said. “I have a great relationship with Matt and everybody in the building. I believe this team is well-positioned for the future and wish Matt, the players, and the entire organization all the best.”
